A first...

Trenton just had his (and our) first Pinewood Derby. Trav and Trenton looked on a site about different designs and such and Trenton decided that he wanted an arrow-shaped car. I was skeptical about it, but it turned out great. He was number 7 out of 9 cars to race and sat all through the first set with anticipation. There are two brothers that he attend Scouts with, whose cars seemed to be unstoppable. I was nervous for him to race them, and was praying that he wouldn't get upset when he lost.
His time came up and he won the first two races... then the next two.... and the next.... and so on. He was the overall champ of his set and up to race the two brothers in the last set to decide the winner. His car was neck-n-neck with the first brothers and towards the bottom of the track jumped off and they had to re-start. Neck-n-neck again and towards the end started to pull forward until it jumped a bit and lost. He stayed more positive than I would have thought, but wasn't jumping up and down like he had before when he was winning. They switched lanes and raced again and he clearly won that time. When they tie like that they flip a coin and the winner picks their lane. Trenton won the coin toss and I shouted at him to choose the lane he won in. It worked. He out raced the other two cars and won overall. I don't think that I've ever seen him jump so high before! It was like watching a Kangaroo in action. Everyone just cracked up. He also won the most creative design. We miss regionals by two days, which he was bummed about.

Way to go Trenton! I have my first Pinewood Derby as a scout leader coming up in April. If they let the leaders make a car, I'll have to make an arrow-shaped one so I can win too! Cool idea.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Buddy!!! That is so awesome!

My girls have still not found an Achievement day leader or YW's leader who will organize a girls Derby race. Lame, but what can you do? One YW leader even said, "but thats a 'boy thing'". Sexism is alive and well.

Wow, congratulations! We need some tips at our house. Our goal is not to come in last place, which has been good enough for Trenton, but Owen is a little more competitive. We are going to be in trouble if Dad doesn't figure it all out by then.
